Williams named head women's basketball coach

Thursday, November 9, 2017 - 2:15pm

Mashea Williams has been hired as the new head women's basketball coach for the Mercyhurst North East Saints. Williams, an Erie native, was a two-time PA State Champion for Mercyhurst Prep. After high school, Williams played for four years for the Nittany Lions at Penn State University. Upon graduation from PSU, Williams played professional basketball in Germany before returning back home to Erie.

Williams brings with her an outstanding career as a player, but she also has been involved as a coach at the youth level and high school level, along with coaching numerous camps and clinics throughout the state.

"I feel extremely lucky to have an opportunity to bring someone like Mashea onto our staff to lead our women's basketball program," said Saints Director of Athletics Brian Dewey. "Losing our former coach a few days after the first practice was challenging but we had a host of great candidates. Mashea's background and connections stood out and I have no doubt she will do a great job for our basketball program."

Williams said, "I am very excited about being named the head women's basketball coach at Mercyhurst North East. It has always been a dream of mine to coach at the collegiate level. I look forward to helping the student athletes' development academically and athletically and to provide a positive impact on the community."

Williams will take over the team from women's basketball assistant coach Eric Miccio.
