Thursday, March 21, 2019 - 12:45pm

The Saints Softball team is off to a good start in 2019, going 13 – 4 on the recent Florida trip. The Saints were ranked 19th in the nation in the preseason poll and are currently 16th. The Saints have nine sophomores, all with significant experience from last year, and six talented freshman who have already made a big impact.

Head coach Brian Dewey enters his 17th year at the helm of the Saints and recently earned his 500th win. He has been named WNYAC Coach of the Year seven times and, under his leadership, the Saints have been to the National Tournament nine out of 15 seasons. In 2016, Dewey guided the Saints to the Western New York Athletic Conference Championship, the Region 3/15/21 championship, and went on to win the District Championship and a spot in the National Junior College Athletic Association (NJCAA) National Tournament. Dewey is a native of Erie and graduated from Mercyhurst College in 2000. He also serves as the MNE athletic director.

Under the direction of Assistant Coach Ron Bretz, the Saints pitching staff has been among the best in the nation, helping the Saints get to the NJCAA National Tournament for nine consecutive years. He was honored in 2017 as NFCA Assistant Coach of the Year and in 2011, 2013, and 2014 as the NFCA East Region Coaching Staff of the Year. Bretz pitched men's fast pitch for 19 years and has been involved in coaching at numerous levels.
