The Mercyhurst North East community will hold a special mass Thursday, Sept. 21, to signify the spiritual beginning of the new academic year and a celebration of the university’s Mercy heritage.
The Mass of the Holy Spirit will begin at 11:15 a.m. in St. Mary’s Chapel and will be followed by a picnic for the university community at 12:30 p.m. on the MNE grounds.
Classes will not be held between 11 a.m. and 2 p.m., so that all may attend. Classes will be as usual prior to and following the event.
Father Tom Brooks of St. Gregory Thaumaturgus Parish and School in North East will be the celebrant for this mass and throughout the academic year.
Brooks has a deep connection to faith and education through positions as faculty/director of guidance at Venango Catholic High School in Oil City, Pennsylvania, and serving at Blessed Sacrament, Sacred Heart, Our Lady of Peace, St. Jude and St. Gregory parishes, all of which had elementary schools during his tenure.
“I’ve always been in school,” said Brooks with a smile. “I’m grateful that St. Gregory Parish and Mercyhurst North East have such a wonderful spirit of cooperation.”
