Cost and Aid

It's been said that the hardest thing about going to college is figuring out how to pay for it. At Mercyhurst University at Booker T. Washington Center, we do our best to help you get through the financial aid process with as little stress and anxiety as possible. Check out the items on the left side of this page for further information about Mercyhurst University financial aid.

Tuition & Fees

Mercyhurst University at BTW offers the best tuition rates available at Mercyhurst University, since many of the fees associated with the University's other campuses are not necessary. The 2017-2018 tuition rates for Mercyhurst University at the Booker T. Washington Center are as follows:

  • $1,605 per three-credit course
  • $75 registration fee per term

 

Types of Financial Aid

Mercyhurst University at the Booker T. Washington Center is made affordable not just by the already low cost, but also with the help of federal, state and institutional financial aid resources. Depending on your personal finances, academic program of choice and timely submission of important forms and documents (i.e., the FAFSA®), your out-of-pocket expenses can be greatly reduced through financial aid.

The items below are the most-used types of financial aid by category: federal, state, institutional and private. While there may be other types of aid that are used from time to time, this list outlines the most common. Contact admissions or student financial services for answers to any financial aid related questions.

Institutional Aid

Booker T. Washington Grant

  • Up to $200 per course.
  • Determined by need and financial situation
  • Must file the FAFSA® (no deadline for NE Grants)
  • Renewable for second year
  • Must be full-time (at least 12 credits per term)

Endowed Scholarship

  • Generally reserved for hardship cases
  • Usually require a thank you note be submitted to the financial aid office
  • Awarded at the discretion of the Office of Student Financial Services

Chamber of Commerce Scholarship

  • Any independent student working for an Erie business that is a member of the Chamber of Commerce is eligible for a COC scholarship.
  • The COC Scholarship is roughly $100 per credit
  • A letter from your employer verifying your status as an "employee in good standing" is required

 

Federal Aid

The following is a quick reference list.

Federal PELL Grants

  • Directly related to the student’s EFC, the PELL grant ranges from $600 to $5,920
  • Does not have to be repaid
  • Need-based

SEOG Grants

  • A limited amount of SEOG grants are available for MNE students
  • Does not have to be repaid
  • Students must receive PELL to be eligible

Federal Direct Student Loans

  • May be either “subsidized” (meaning the government pays the interest on them while you’re in school or “unsubsidized” (your interest will accrue while in school)
  • In the student’s name, and no co-signer is required
  • All first-time students (never attended college before) will be eligible for $5,500 for their first year
  • If student is independent (according to FAFSA®), may be eligible for an additional $4,000 unsubsidized loan

Federal Direct Parent PLUS Loans

  • PLUS loans are much like alternative loans, but are in the parent’s name
  • If parent gets denied, student gets an additional $4,000 unsubsidized student loan
  • Repayment generally begins 60 days after last disbursement in a given school year

State Aid

The following is a brief description of the state grant.

PHEAA State Grants

  • Must be a PA resident for at least a year
  • Must file your FAFSA® by May 1; Aug. 1 if never attended before
  • Must be enrolled in at least a 2-year program
  • Must fill out and return the PHEAA state grant notice
  • Grant amounts are determined by PHEAA and based on the students FAFSA®

 

Private Loans

Alternative Loans

  • Numerous lenders offer student loans with interest rates starting at prime
  • Repayment for most begins six months after the student is no longer enrolled at least part-time
  • Creditworthy co-signers are usually required (does not have to be a parent)
  • Mercyhurst does not endorse any particular lender; if you call, we would be happy to give you some options.

 

High School Students

Currently, high school students with the permission of their guidance counselor are billed $315 per 3-credit class and $75 per term registration fee. High school students are not eligible for any federal, state or institutional financial aid, and should be prepared to pay "out-of-pocket" for textbooks.

 

Process and Policies

Making your college education affordable is one of our number one priorities at Mercyhurst. If you follow the appropriate steps, our staff should be able to give you accurate estimates for your cost of attendance, financial aid, and bottom line for your first year.

The following is an outline of the financial aid process at Mercyhurst. If you have any questions, please contact admissions at (814) 725-6144.

  1. Student applies to Mercyhurst and is accepted
    • Generally, an award will not be estimated until the student is accepted
  2. Student files the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA®) after January 1 (usually upon completion of your taxes)
    • Fill out the FAFSA® at www.fafsa.ed.gov
    • PA resident? File by May 1st to help ensure you are eligible to receive a state grant
    • Sign the FAFSA® with your FSA ID.
    • Parent’s FSA ID also required for dependent students
    • Use the Mercyhurst University school code: 003297
  3. Mercyhurst receives your Estimated Family Contribution (EFC)
    • Your EFC helps determine your PELL grant, PHEAA state grant, subsidized loan amount, and other need-based forms of aid
    • If anything changes in your family’s financial situation, please notify admissions immediately for information on the appeal process
  4. A preliminary financial aid award is created
    • You should receive both a letter and most likely a call from your admissions counselor in reference to this award
    • This award is based on the academic program and resident status (living on- or off-campus) in our system; if either changes, your package may change.
  5. Student determines a bottom line (cost minus financial aid) and plans accordingly
    • Once you know your bottom line, you will know how much money “out-of-pocket” you will need for the year. You can address this “out-of-pocket” cost with savings, alternative loans, parent loans and/or outside scholarships
  6. By mid-summer, if your confirmation deposit has been received, your award will be finalized
    • If selected for “Verification”, that process must be completed before your award will be finalized. Roughly one out of every three students is selected.

Throughout the course of the financial aid process do not hesitate to contact admissions. We can assist you with filling out the FAFSA® form, filling out master promissory notes, and advise you on helpful financial aid and alternative loan websites, including aesSuccess.org and pheaa.org - there's great information available at each!

 

Notes

Students who enroll at least half-time (two 3 credit courses per term) may be eligible for state or federal grants or loans; full-time students (four 3 credit courses) may also be eligible for North East grants.

Students may wish to continue their education at Mercyhurst's branch campuses.

Books are available roughly a week before each term at the Booker T. Washington Center front desk. While you are encouraged to pay for your books out of pocket, you may be able to make arrangements for your financial aid to cover the cost (if the extra funds are available) by contacting the Office of  Student Finanical Services at (814)725-6265 .
