“Captain Dan” Geary joins WYNE

“Captain Dan” Geary, one of Erie’s most well-known radio personalities, has joined WYNE 1530 AM, Mercyhurst North East’s radio station, as sales manager and host of its morning show. He officially began on Jan. 7.
WYNE, which has a 50s, 60s and early-70s format, hit the airwaves in mid-August under the leadership of another veteran Erie radio personality, Bill Shannon. Geary and Shannon together bring more than 75 years of experience to WYNE.
In addition to early stints at Erie’s WWGO, WCCK, and WWYN, and WJET, Geary spent a decade as one of the hosts of Classy 100’s original Breakfast Club, and then nine years as the co-host of the morning show at Froggy 94.7. He could most recently be heard as host of Erie Talk in the Morning on WJET 1400 AM.
“Dan will be a huge addition to our station. He’s one of the most well-known disc jockeys in the Erie market,” said Shannon. “Our friendship goes back many years, and even though our paths have crossed many times, this is the first time we will actually be working together.”
Geary said he is looking forward to getting back to an oldies format at a locally owned radio station.
“I have a real affinity and love and appreciation of oldies formats,” he said. “WYNE is the only station in the area playing oldies anymore. And I saw first-hand a real commitment here, both to North East and to the format.”
In addition to bringing oldies back to the local airwaves, the station serves as an integral part of Mercyhurst North East’s newly-created associate degree program in radio broadcasting.
Under Shannon’s instruction, students learn everything from on-air broadcasting of news, sports and weather, to how to operate radio equipment, to advertising sales.
Three Mercyhurst North East students, Emily Morgan, Chad Geiger and Debbie Basta, can currently be heard on the air on WYNE.
