Police officers get mandatory Act 180 training at MNE

Hundreds of police officers from all over northwestern Pennsylvania will be training on the campus of Mercyhurst North East for the next month as part of a mandatory annual training for law enforcement personnel.
The Mercyhurst College Public Safety Institute (PSI) is providing Act 180 certification updates to approximately 850 Pennsylvania police officers, with nearly 200 of them receiving the training at the Municipal Police Training Academy at Mercyhurst North East. In addition to sessions in North East, the PSI is hosting sessions in Millcreek, Franklin, West Mead, Hermitage, Edinboro, Meadville, St. Mary’s, Bradford, and Warren. The training will continue through Feb. 7 in North East, and at the other locations through April 17.
Police officers in Pennsylvania are required to complete 16 hours of mandatory in-service training annually in order to maintain their Act 180 certification.
Anywhere from 20 to 40 officers will attend each of the 10 two-day sessions held at the MNE Municipal Police Academy. Topics for this year’s courses include: Legal Updates; Radical Islam: A Law Enforcement Primer; Street Encounters: Investigatory Detention and Warrantless Searches; and Games Criminals Play: Unusual Weapons & Concealment.
