Hoston Signs At D-I Eastern Kentucky

Mercyhurst North East women’s basketball player Sonjia Hoston has signed a national letter of intent and signed a basketball scholarship to attend Eastern Kentucky University.

Hoston, a native of Pittsburgh, PA (Wilkinsburg High School) has played center for the Saints the past two seasons and had a standout career at Mercyhurst North East.

Hoston was an All Region III selection this past season. Hoston also made the Western New York Athletic Conference (WNYAC) team. She scored 7.8 points per game and shot 51 percent from the field.
As a freshman, Hoston scored 9.4 ppg and grabbed 6.3 rebounds per game. She also led the Saints with 37 blocks.

“As our team captain this past season and an imposing force in the post, Sonjia, the true meaning of a gentle giant, will be tough to replace next season”, said Saints Head Coach Ryan Bailey.

“Sonjia is a great kid who will be missed by all on the campus of Mercyhurst North East.  She was not just a member of the women’s basketball team, but also a Resident Assistant on campus.”

Eastern Kentucky is located in Richmond, KY and plays in the Ohio Valley Conference. The Colonels went 14-14 this past season and qualified for the OVC tournament.

“Sonjia is the first player in the history of the women’s basketball program to move on and play at the NCAA Division I level.  It just shows how far she has come.  When she was being recruited out of high school, she was only being recruited by one scholarship program (Mercyhurst North East) and now is going to be playing at basketball’s highest level.”
