Nursing Program Facilities Sister Joseph Mary Kosarsky Nursing students at Mercyhurst North East get clinical practice right in the classroom thanks to this state-of-the-art nursing arts lab. Nine human patient simulators and one intravenous (IV) simulator are housed in the lab, located in the Michele and Tom Ridge Health and Safety Building. The patient simulators, including five adults, two children, one infant, and one birthing mother, can be programmed to imitate basic and complex body functions and symptoms of illness, and nursing students can practice actual medical procedures on them. The life-like mannequins can cough, moan, and even tell the students their symptoms. They have interchangeable parts that replicate skin lesions, surgical wounds, and even conditions like gangrenous feet and varicose veins. The birthing mother actually simulates giving birth, and comes complete with a fetus, placenta, and newborn baby. The IV simulator is a virtual reality program that teaches students how to properly insert and remove an IV, and presents various problems and conditions associated with the procedure. |
