What can I do with
this degree?

Child care professionals care for and educate infants, toddlers, preschoolers and primary-aged children in a variety of settings, including:

  • Nursery schools
  • Daycare centers
  • Head Start programs
  • Private preschools
  • Private households

The associate degree program also provides a foundation to pursue a bachelor’s degree or teaching certificate at a four-year institution, including Mercyhurst’s Erie campus.

What is the job outlook for this field?
According to the U.S. Department of Labor and Industry, jobs in childcare are expected to grow because the number of women in the workforce of childbearing age and the number of children under five years of age are both expected to rise over the next 10 years. Also, the number of children being cared for exclusively by parents or other relatives is likely to continue to decline, spurring demand for additional child care workers.
