Saints Claim District Championship
Mercyhurst North East 7, Orange County Community College 6
In a game where the lead shifted back and fourth, the Saints got a boost from the home crowd and emerged victorious in one of the most exciting games in the history of Vineyard Field.
Orange scored first in the top of the first inning before Mercyhurst tied the game when Alayna Carlson singled home Andrea Aldridge.
After Orange scored two in the top of the third to go ahead 3-1, Mercyhurst responded with a three run bottom half.
Aldridge singled to start the inning and would later score on a sac fly. Carlson then doubled to keep the inning alive before Celia Brown walked. Skye Ripple then hit a ball to centerfield to tie the game and the next pitch was in the dirt and Brown scooted home to make it 4-3.
In the top of the fifth, the Colts scored two more to take the lead.
In the bottom half, the Saints loaded the bases with one out and Skye Ripple singled to center to score two runs to put the Saints back on top. Allison Balkovic then executed a perfect suicide squeeze to send Carlson home with a much needed insurance run.
Orange scored again in the sixth and had the tying run on second before Ronette Claar got the Colts best hitter on a pop-up to end the threat. In the seventh, the Colts got two runners on with one out but Claar struck out the next two batters to end the game and give the Saints the championship.
Claar struck out 12 batters to earn the complete game victory.
Carlson was tops at the plate with three hits while Claar, Aldridge, and Ripple had two hits each.
With the win, the Saints are now 43-10 overall and will advance to the NJCAA National Tournament held May 15-18 in Clinton Mississippi.
