Coach Brian Dewey led the 2009 Saints to their best finish ever as they wrapped up the season with an overall record of 29-14, a conference and district championship, and for the first time in the programs history, a spot in the National Tournament. Mercyhurst finished the season as the 13th best team in the NJCAA Division II.
In seven years as head softball coach, Dewey has complied an overall record of 171 - 91.
The Saints were co-champs of the Western New York Athletic Conference (WNYAC) with a 9-1 record. It marks the fifth WNYAC title in the past six years. Dewey was named WNYAC Coach of the Year for the 2nd straight season and five Saints were placed on the all conference team.
The Saints swept CCRI 13-6 and 10-2 to claim the first District Championship in the programs history and as a result, qualified for the NJCAA World Series in mid-May. The Saints would fall to the eventual national champions by a score of 5-2 in their first game.
In his seven year career, Dewey has been named WNYAC Coach of the Year three times (2005, 2008, & 2009), Region Coach of the Year twice (2005 & 2006), and NFCA East Region Coach of the Year in 2006. Dewey was one of three nominated for National Coach of the Year in 2006.
Before taking over the softball program, Dewey served as the assistant baseball coach for the Saints during the 2001-02 season. Previously, Dewey was a member of the baseball coaching staff at Central High School in Erie, Pennsylvania for six years. During the summer, Dewey also manages a men's softball team.
In addition to his duties as head softball coach, Dewey also serves as the schools Compliance Director.
Dewey is from Erie, PA. and graduated from Mercyhurst College in 2000 with a degree in business administration. He then worked as a sports correspondent for the Erie Times News before coming to Mercyhurst North East.
